If your AI can't take a challenge, it doesn't get to decide.
Part 4 of the Don't Retire. Rewire. series.

Here's the principle I want every banking leader to carry into the AI era: if your AI can't take a challenge, it doesn't get to decide. Responsible AI leadership starts with a simple test — can the system explain itself, survive scrutiny, and be overruled? If not, it has no business making decisions that affect customers, capital, or careers.
Governance isn't the enemy of innovation; it's what makes innovation survivable. Banks learned this with every technology wave: the institutions that thrived were the ones that paired bold experimentation with disciplined controls. AI is no different — except the stakes are higher and the black boxes are shinier.
So build the muscle now. Challenge every AI output the way you'd challenge a junior analyst's recommendation. Demand sources. Test edge cases. Ask who is accountable when the model is wrong — and make sure the answer is a human with a name, not a committee with a charter.
Judgment is the control. Your experience — the scar tissue from cycles, crises, and calls you got right and wrong — is the most sophisticated governance system in the building. Wire it into every AI workflow you touch.
In the final part of this series, we turn all of this into action: your 90-day plan to get excited again.
